A practical approach to inspiring design....
With his practical landscape construction experience Andrew is proving a valuable addition to the crew at Southern Landmarx in Queenstown. Andrew has taken his natural talent for construction and combined it with landscaping qualifications, having achieved his national certificate in Landscaping at Otago Polytech after he left school.
He then spent 5 years working for another award winning firm, where he met his partner Nicola Copeland, also part of the crew at Southern Landmarx. During this time he also spent a stint in Australia broad acre harvesting, and this gives him plenty of confidence operating the various pieces of machinery including diggers and tractors that Southern Landmarx can bring to jobs.
With Nicola, Andrew travelled overseas for two years, and this included building on his landscaping experience. This included a role as a sole charge grounds man on an extensive estate in West Sussex. It proved an experience as enjoyable as it was educational, opening his eyes to the influences on European gardens and the many styles, plants and constructions used within those gardens.
He says one of the most memorable visited was the hugely popular Hatfield House, a 15ha garden estate that combines elements of the historic with modern sculpture and design.
Back in Otago Andrew is relishing the opportunity to work in the province that is home for him, and one with the climate and landscape to provide many opportunities and challenges for interesting, enduring landscape constructions.
“The projects Southern Landmarx work on here in Queenstown often involve clients who are keen to make a statement and challenge landscape design, which makes bringing those designs to life an excellent challenge of my construction skills.”
Andy also won the prestigious Young Landscaper of the Year 2012 title.
